Please join APT WGLC on an exclusive members-only tour of the Chicago Cultural Center Grand Army of the Republic Rooms Restoration in downtown Chicago! Sign up for a chance to see behind the scenes of the in-progress project of this Chicago Landmark. The tour is open to 20 APT WGLC Members.
The Chicago Cultural Center was designed by Boston firm Shepley, Rutan, and Coolidge and constructed between 1892 and 1897. Originally built as the Chicago Public Library and Civil War Memorial, the space has been transformed into the nation's first and most comprehensive free municipal cultural venue. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and designated a City of Chicago Landmark in 1976, and is currently undergoing a complete restoration of the Grand Army of the Republic Rooms. The restoration includes interior plaster and paint finishes, 40’ Healy and Millet stained glass dome, marble walls, interior doors and millwork, and historic light fixture replication.
APT WGLC will meet at 3:00 PM on Thursday, September 9, 2021, at the main entrance stairs on the north side of the building (Randolph Street Entrance). We will start the tour outside on Randolph Street and then proceed inside for a tour of the GAR Rooms. This is an active construction site. Please wear boots and bring a hardhat. Extra hardhats will be available onsite upon request.
COVID-19 Safety: In addition to the construction site safety protocols, we will be following the CDC and building specific guidelines.
