Conserving Rwandan Genocide Memorials
A recent multi-year project by a PennDesign team on the conservation of genocide memorial sites in Rwanda presented a number of challenges. The technical, design and interpretive challenges presented by conserving building, site and collections were considerable. The political, cultural and social contexts of the work shaped the direction of our work dramatically. Working on sites of traumatic heritage provokes important questions about the future of preservation work, and this project has given me a valuable chance to explore the possibilities.
Learning Objectives:
· Investigate the construction, preservation and interpretation challenges presented by conserving buildings of traumatic heritage.
· Demonstrate hands-on measures that can be used to physically restore deteriorating memorial buildings and sites, preserve their interpretive context and protect the welfare of visitors.
· Illustrate how the conservation challenges on sites of traumatic heritage provoke important questions about the future of restoring building envelopes and public sites to safety requirements.
· Review the management approaches to manage the life safety and emotional well-being of visitors to significant genocide sites across Rwanda.
